This descriptive study with qualitative approach aimed to identify the feelings that result from the practice and training of nurses working in mobile Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Nine nurses were interviewed in September 2007. Bardin's content analysis was used and six categories emerged: "Feelings aroused in the EMS", "Experiences in the daily routine", "nurses' activities in EMS", "Personal and professional preparedness", "Reflecting on the professional training" and "Nurses' perceptions of the EMS". The importance of this study lays in the need for personally, professionally and emotionally prepared nurses and also in the need to acknowledge and value the nursing practice in this service. The results revealed that nurses working in EMS feel secure, prepared and motivated to work and they also experience diverse feelings such as compassion, gratitude, anger, pity, sadness and anxiety. Acknowledgment and the possibility of restoring lives motivate them.

Resumo: O estudo de Sistemas de Atendimento Emergencial -SAE visa encontrar meios de fornecer serviços de Abstract:The study of EMS aims to find ways to provide effective health services and improve the quality of life of the population while respecting the limitations of available resources. In this context, this paper aims to show the potential of application of the hypercube queueing model using queue priorities with more than one preferential server without using partial backup on SAMU, where the workload is relatively low. To do so, were done some experiments with the hypercube queueing model and future scenario prospection by a case study on the SAMU system from Bauru, Brazil. It was evaluated the impacts of demand increase over the system and the acquisition of a new ambulance was evaluated considering the best options to locate it. Main results show that a 50% demand increase can double mean response times. In contrast, minor increases have a smaller impact over the system, as observed on 5.71% and 13.57% demand increases, where the mean response times raised 5% and 16% respectively. The acquisition of a new ambulance was evaluated in terms of mean response times also. The best location had a 3% lower mean response time, on average. Financial support: CAPES and FAPESP.

The mobile emergency service, one of the main strategies of the National Policy of Medical Emergencies that has been implemented throughout the whole of the country in 2004, was only implemented in Cuiabá in 2007. This descriptive study reports the personal experience of one of the authors as a pre-hospital service (PHS) nurse who participated in the implementation process of the mobile emergency service. Until 2004, emergency services were carried out exclusively by the fire fighter (FF) department. The reorganization of the PHS enabled the inclusion of nursing professionals in the mobile emergency services. This reorganization of the PHS let to the detachment of the FF from mobile emergency services, moving the PHS to a new base and developing work activities as a civil service. This report describes that opportunities for nursing professionals in mobile emergency services have driven demands for specialization courses and the development of studies to prepare new practitioners. O estudo relata a experiência de uma das autoras como enfermeira do Atendimento Pré-Hospitalar (APH), participante do processo de implantação do serviço. Até 2004, em Mato Grosso, o atendimento às urgências era realizado exclusivamente pelo Corpo de Bombeiros (CB). A reformulação do APH possibilitou a inserção de profissionais de enfermagem em uma área não conquistada por essa profissão neste município. Tal reestruturação implicou desvinculação do CB, mudança para sede própria e desenvolvimento das atividades relacionadas ao serviço apenas por civis. Conclui-se que a nova possibilidade de atuação para profissionais de enfermagem impulsionou a busca de especializações e desenvolvimento de estudos que subsidiem a atuação prática nesse ambiente.
