The Characteristic Hydraulic Times (CHT), called Residence Time (RT) and Water Age (WA), were analyzed in the Mundaú-Manguaba Estuarine Lagoon System (MMELS – AL, Brazil), using the SisBaHiA® – Environmental Hydrodynamics Base System, for two scenarios: wet season, from May to July 2018; and dry season, from October to December 2018. The hydrodynamic modelings appropriately represented water level variations measured in the lagoons. The analysis of residual currents revealed how hydrodynamic circulation was affected by seasonal variations, and provided essential information to understand the results of the RT and WA simulations. This study deepened the knowledge regarding the RT of the water masses inside the lagoons, and reinforced how river discharges significantly influence their export, which resulted, considering the spatial scope, in much smaller RT in the wet season compared to the dry season. The WA analysis added new and significant knowledge about water renewal, from a different perspective, and as yet little-explored in the study region. Among the results obtained, the most relevant refer to the dry season, in which it was found that the “oldest” waters in the Mundaú L. occurred near the southeast region, while in the Manguaba L., in the vicinity of the central region. Both regions were confirmed as the places that present the most critical trophic state index in each lagoon, showing that WA is a CHT that indicates the regions most conducive to more critical trophic states. The Mundaú-Manguaba Estuary Lagoon Complex is located on the coast of Alagoas state in Northeastern Brazil, and consists of two shallow lagoons, Mundaú and Manguaba, that form a system of choked lagoons which are connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a series of narrow channels with a single outlet which dynamically alters its position. This study uses the Hydrodynamic Environmental System, SisBaHiA® to investigate how variations in river discharge and wind influence hydrodynamic circulation, water renewal, salinity and temperature in the lagoons. The free surface positions, obtained by model, were compared with the free surface positions measured at two points of the complex, showing good agreement. The analyses were carried out for dry and wet seasons and extreme events with very high freshwater discharge. The channel system of the lagoons is an efficient filter in reducing tidal variability inside the lagoons. The tidal ranges in the Manguaba and Mundaú Lagoons are 90% and 80% lower, respectively, as compared with the values in the open boundary. The residence time calculated varied between 11 and 365 days and between 2 and 180 days for the Manguaba and Mundaú Lagoons, respectively, making it possible to identify possible stagnation areas. The results from the salt and heat transport model show a prolonged period with low salt concentrations and slow salinity recovery after the rainy season; the water temperature in the lagoons shows little spatial and temporal variation.

Integrated tools to evaluate environmental conditions in estuarine streams of Northeastern Brazil

Aim This work proposes the application and development of environmental quality indexes for the evaluation of tropical estuarine streams in different spatial scales. The main goal was to understand the biological responses of the ichthyofauna in relation to different spatial indices in each group of streams, according to their predominant land use. Our hypothesis is that the impact on the stream riparian zones and in the land use in adjacent areas to the stream interfere in the structure of the fish assembly. Methods The Physical Habitat Integrity Index (PHI) on the local scale (80.0 m) and the Microbasin Integrity Index (MII) on catchment scale (1.6 km radius) was applied in all streams. In parallel, fish collections with electric fishing equipment were carried out in the 80.0 m reach. With the data from the PHI, MII and ecological estimators (species richness and percentage of Poecilia reticulata), the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test and Dunn’s post hoc test were carried out to verify the differences between the groups of land use, followed by a linear and polynomial regression analysis with trend line to show a relationship among indexes used and the biological responses. Results We observed that all streams’ groups presented a high positive correlation among PHI and MII. However, ecological estimators did not respond to changes in land use linearly, but in the form of a parable in a polynomial regression. Conclusions Our main conclusion is that the use of indexes and estimators as tools for environmental assessment is an efficient way to assess the health of the streams. The results also show that the integration of local and spatial indexes reduces the distortions observed in the indexes in isolation.
