Um Novo Método para Predição da Evasão Escolar Usando Redes Neurais

Abstract

Abstract-Dropping out of school is one of the most complex and crucial problems in education. Worldwide, the phenomenon afflicts and concerns everyone involved, from basic education to higher education, both public and private, causing social, economic, political, academic and financial losses. Therefore, it is fundamental to develop efficient methods for prediction, assessment and monitoring of the students at risk of dropping out, making the planning and adoption of proactive actions possible to minimize the situation. In this perspective, this paper presents the potentials of an intelligent, bold and innovative system, developed for the prediction of risk groups of student dropout in higher education classroom using a Fuzzy ARTMAP Neural Network, one of the techniques of artificial intelligence, with the possibility of continued learning. It was implemented in the technology courses of the Federal Institute of Mato Grosso, based on the academic and socioeconomic records of the students. The results, showing a success rate of the dropout group around 97% and overall accuracy over 76%, highlights the reliability and accuracy of the system. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the strength and boldness of this research lies in the possibility of identifying early the eminent school dropout using only the enrollment data.Keywords-higher education, school dropout, prediction dropout, artificial neural networks (ANN), Art Family, Fuzzy ARTMAP neural network. I. INTRODUÇÃOHistoricamente, a evasão escolar é um dos problemas mais complexos e cruciais no âmbito da educação. Ela gera prejuízos sociais, econômicos, políticos, acadêmicos e financeiros a todos os envolvidos no processo educativo, desde o estudante até os órgãos governamentais e de fomento, que anseiam por estratégias eficazes para reduzir os índices da evasão escolar, haja vista que as medidas adotadas até então não surtiram o efeito desejado.No que tange ao ensino superior, a evasão escolar é um problema internacional. Apesar de seus índices apresentarem variações consideráveis entre diferentes nações, eles demonstram que na atualidade a evasão escolar está presente e assola cada vez mais um número maior de instituições de ensino superior (IES) no mundo.A propósito, pode-se mencionar os Estados Unidos -EUA, com taxa de evasão nas faculdades e universidades em torno de 40%, representando um declínio no índice de estudantes graduados no ensino superior [1]. Em contrário, China e Índia, potencializam o ensino superior, aumentando o índice de conclusão [2]. Entre estes extremos situa-se o Brasil, apresentando um índice médio de evasão em torno de 20% [3,4].Resguardando todas as diferenças e especificidades das IES de diferentes nações, ainda assim, existe um ponto de convergência entre elas, a árdua tarefa de solucionar o problema da evasão [5].Nessa perspectiva, programas de prevenção e intervenção são desenvolvidos e estruturados levando-se em consideração os resultados de pesquisas que identificam as possíveis causas que geram o fenômeno da evasão.
