OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to evaluate the search for health information on the Internet and to determine the frequency and main means of spreading fake health news. METHODS:A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted through the virtual distribution of questionnaires on social media platforms in 2019 by using the snowball technique. The questionnaire collected information regarding sociodemographics, means used to clarify doubts about health, implementation of information obtained through the Internet, receipt of fake news, and means of transmission of fake news. Quantitative variables are described as means and standard deviations, and categorical variables are described as frequencies and percentages. The chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used. RESULTS:Out of 1,195 respondents, 53% had followed Internet guidance without consulting a health professional, especially young people and individuals with low education levels (p<0.05). The resources most used to answer questions about health were a physician (78%) and Google (51%), and searches using the latter were more predominant among younger age groups (p<0.05). A large part of the sample (89.4%) had received fake news, and the main means of receipt were Facebook and WhatsApp. CONCLUSIONS:The Internet was the second most commonly used means to search for health information. A significant portion of the population adopts actions based on this information. The frequency of broadcasting fake news through this digital medium is high.

O surgimento da emergência internacional em saúde pública originada pelo novo coronavírus-2 gerou a adoção de medidas não farmacológicas preventivas, como o isolamento social, como forma de conter a propagação. Entretanto, com a manifestação da nova doença e o confinamento adotado, a população passa a ser conduzida pela curiosidade em compreender melhor a enfermidade, optando em realizar buscas online sobre a temática, porém o usuário ao encontrar informações pertinentes à possíveis medicamentos que estejam entrelaçadas a notícias falsas, torna-se propício em crer e praticar a automedicação irresponsável como forma preventiva. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar o efeito de informações sobre medicamentos com estudos científicos inconclusivos contra Covid-19 contidas na internet e a influência na automedicação durante o primeiro ano da pandemia do novo coronavírus no Brasil. O estudo trata-se de uma revisão de literatura, no qual utilizou-se obras científicas contidas em base de dados publicadas entre o ano de 2020 a 2021. Os dados obtidos demonstram que as publicações de possíveis medicamentos intitulados promissores, despertaram a curiosidade em parte da sociedade brasileira no qual notou-se o aumento de buscas pelos descritores em sites de pesquisas, sendo apontado as redes sociais Facebook e WhatsApp como prováveis fontes disseminadoras de informações errôneas, no qual o impacto do compartilhamento pode ter provocado o aumento na venda das drogas em debate e consequentemente a elevação da automedicação durante o período. No entanto, a colaboração de outros fatores como o psicológico abalado, diminuição de confiabilidade na ciência e o temor pelo futuro incerto tem levado parte dos brasileiros à uma corrida sem precedentes em drogarias e farmácias em busca dos fármacos promitentes.
