Abstract-Conflict between native amphibians and aquatic weed management in the Pacific Northwest is rarely recognized because most native stillwater-breeding amphibian species move upland during summer, when herbicide application to control weeds in aquatic habitats typically occurs. However, aquatic weed management may pose a risk for aquatic species present in wetlands through the summer, such as the Oregon spotted frog (OSF, Rana pretiosa), a state endangered species in Washington. Acute toxicity of herbicides used to control aquatic weeds tends to be low, but the direct effects of herbicide tank mixes on OSFs have remained unexamined. We exposed juvenile OSFs to tank mixes of the herbicide imazapyr, a surfactant, and a marker dye in a 96-h static-renewal test. The tank mix was chosen because of its low toxicity to fish and its effectiveness in aquatic weed control. Concentrations were those associated with low-volume (3.5 L/ha) and high-volume (7.0 L/ha) applications of imazapyr and a clean-water control. Following exposure, frogs were reared for two months in clean water to identify potential latent effects on growth. Endpoints evaluated included feeding behavior, growth, and body and liver condition indices. We recorded no mortalities and found no significant differences for any end point between the herbicide-exposed and clean-water control frogs. The results suggest that imazapyr use in wetland restoration poses a low risk of direct toxic effects on juvenile OSFs. Environ. Toxicol. Chem. 2013;32:228-235. # 2012 SETAC

Ö ÖZ ZE ET T Deniz kaplumbağaları olarak tanımlanan yedi türün altısı, Uluslararası Doğa Koruma Birliği (IUCN) tarafından soyu tükenme tehlikesindeki türler olarak listelenmiştir. Populasyon artışının birçok bölgede istenen düzeyde olmaması ve azalma eğiliminde olması sebebiyle koruma ve kurtarma çalışmaları önem kazanmaktadır. Çeşitli sebeplerle acil müdahale ve yoğun bakım gerektiren patolojilerle sıklıkla ölüm riskiyle karşı karşıya bulunan deniz kaplumbağalarının, özellikle de dişilerin kurtarılması önem arz etmektedir. Deniz kaplumbağalarının kabuklu ve ektotermik olmaları gibi anatomik ve fizyolojik olarak bir çok hayvandan farklı özellikler göstermesi veteriner hekimlere zorluk teşkil etmektedir. Bu çalışmada; kritik hasta ve yaralı deniz kaplumbağalarında acil müdahale ve yoğun bakım gereken durumların ve önceliğinin belirlenmesi, önemi, uygulamaların yapılışı ve dikkat edilecek noktalar hakkında bilgiler sunulması amaçlanmıştır. Muayene ve teşhis, hastanın stabilize edilmesi, tercih edilen optimal sıcaklık aralığı (TOSA), sıvı sağaltımı, oral uygulamalar, kardiyopulmoner resüsitasyon uygulamaları, terapötik ajanlar, bakım, besleme, hospitalizasyon uygulamaları gibi başlıklara dair mevcut güncel tercihler derlendi. Ayırıcı tanı ve tedavi uygulamalarındaki ilkeler ve önemli noktalara değinildi. Travmatik hasarlar, hipertermi ve hipotermi, boğulma, zehirlenme, distosi, kloaka ve fallus prolapsusları, distosi, kusma, ileus, obstrüksi-yonlar, parazitler, suya batmama sorunları, pnömoni, dekompresyon hastalığı, enfeksiyöz hastalıklar ve septisemi, bakteriyel ve fungal hastalıklar gibi önemli sorunlar hakkında özlü bilgiler verildi. Bakım şartları ve rehabilitasyonda önemli püf noktaları belirtildi. Protection and rescue efforts are gaining importance as the population increase is not at the desired level in many regions and tends to decline. It is also important to save sea turtles, especially females, who have pathologies that require emergency and critical care caused by a variety of reasons and often at risk of death. It is challenging for veterinarians that sea turtles have unusual anatomical and physiological features such as the shell and being ectothermic. The purpose of this study was to quantify the ultraviolet B (UVB) output and in vitro previtamin D(3) synthesis over time from various artificial light sources. Three incandescent lamps, T-Rex Active UVHeat 160 watt spot, T-Rex Active UVHeat 160 watt flood, and ZooMed PowerSun 160 watt flood, and two 1.2 m fluorescent lamps, Sylvania Blacklight 350 BL and ZooMed Reptisun 5.0, were studied. Total UVB irradiance and concentration of previtamin D synthesized using an in vitro ampoule model were quantified initially and at monthly intervals for 1 year. Incandescent lamps were measured at distances of 0.9 and 1.5 m while fluorescent lamps were measured at distances of 30.5 and 45.7 cm at the lamp's center, using both the radiometer and ampoules. Fluorescent lamp irradiance was also measured at the lamp's ends. Data were analyzed as a repeated measures split-plot in time using SAS with all mean differences determined using Least Squares Means. Incandescent lamp irradiance differences were seen at various distances. The UVHeat lamps had consistently higher previtamin D(3) production and irradiance readings compared with the PowerSun lamp. Reptisun 5.0 was consistently higher in UVB irradiance over Sylvania BL 350 at both 30.5 and 45.7 cm. However, there were no differences when comparing conversion of 7-dehydrocholesterol to previtamin D(3). Irradiance differences were detected between the centers and ends of the fluorescent lamps. Until UVB requirements for vitamin D(3) synthesis in animals are determined, it is impossible to state that one light is superior to another.
