Ultraviolet Light and Reptiles, Amphibians

Abstract: Ultraviolet lighting is integral for the growth and maintenance of many reptile and amphibian species. But providing an ade quate source of light can be challenging. Many disease processes seen by veterinarians are attributed to ultraviolet lighting deficiencies. In mammals, disease due to excess ultraviolet lighting has been noted, and some veterinarians feel this may be a potential issue in reptiles and amphibians.

“…Light was provided along the edge of one short side of the tanks from 2% UVB fluorescent bulbs (ReptiSun 2.0 UVB; ZooMed) located within 45 cm of the bottom of the tank and filtered through the nylon mesh screen top [15]. Ultraviolet lights and overhead room lights were synchronized to a 13:11 light:dark cycle, the approximate duration of daylight at the time of the study.…”

“…The term “metabolic bone disease” encompasses a variety of bone‐related diseases, including rickets, osteomalacia, osteopenia, and osteoporosis, all of which are associated with a weakening of bone structure. Metabolic bone disease is considered a serious health problem among certain species of captive reptiles [Allen and Oftedal, 1996; Allen et al, 1994, 1996, 1999; Adkins et al, 2003; Ferguson et al, 1996; Fowler, 1986; Kenny, 1998; Laing et al, 2001; Ullrey and Bernard, 1999]. The occurrence of metabolic bone diseases can be a result of vitamin D deficiency and poor intestinal calcium absorption.…”
