Ultraviolet Fluorescence Photography—Choosing the Correct Filters for Imaging

Abstract: Ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence is a valuable tool for the imaging of a wide range of subjects. Like all imaging techniques, the key to success depends on the correct choice of equipment and approach used. In fluorescence photography, a filter is placed in front of the camera lens to block unwanted short-wavelength light from entering the camera, which would compromise the image. However, some filters exhibit fluorescence under UV light and can therefore have the potential to produce a color cast on the image. F… Show more

“…These distinctions are in line with the terminology already used in photography (UV-induced fluorescence photography [ 3 6 ] and UV reflected/reflectance photography [ 7 , 8 ]. We intentionally added the “sUV/UV-induced” prefix to fluorescence dermatoscopy to emphasize that no UV signal is received by the eye.…”

“…By selectively transmitting the long wavelength emission signal and blocking excitation light, the long-pass filter enhances the contrast and visibility of fluorescence signals emitted by foreign objects against a background ( Yamazaki et al, 2012 ; Wei et al, 2013 ) developed a hand-held fluorescence imaging device that incorporates a long-pass thin-film interference filter to reject scattered excitation light, enabling the visualization of single nanoparticles and viruses. Crowther (2022) discussed using Quaser filters for ultraviolet fluorescence photography, similar to long-pass filters. Bueno et al (2014) emphasized the importance of dichroic mirrors and filters in color cameras to acquire fluorescence images effectively.…”

“…Spectrophotometers, on the other hand, are capable of measuring UV radiation at multiple wavelengths, allowing for a more comprehensive analysis. However, these instruments are often expensive and bulky, posing challenges to widespread use [5,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…Such advancements would enable the early identification of potential issues, facilitate timely repairs or replacements, and ensure the ongoing contribution of fenestration to optimal building energy performance. In this context, the burgeoning field of digital imaging technology, particularly digital image photography, offers a promising avenue for exploration and development, as will be detailed in Part II of this review [8][9][10].…”
