Ultrathin organic layers for corrosion protection

Abstract: The adsorption and self‐organisation process of alkyl‐phosphonic acids and phosphoric acid monoalkyl esters on technical aluminium surfaces have been investigated by different surface sensible techniques: Grazing angle FT‐IR‐ spectroscopy, angle dependent XPS and Auger‐ spectroscopy. The aim of these studies was to replace the present technical procedure for pretreatment of aluminum surfaces with Chromate acid in order to improve the corrosion inhibition and the coating adhesion. The ability for self‐assembly … Show more

“…The fact that the υP-OH features have disappeared from the 2725-1600 cm −1 region and the very low intensity at 1230 cm −1 typical of the P O vibration, could possibly indicate that the binding is mostly tridentate. This is corroborated with the band between 1200 and 1000 cm −1 , which in the context of the present work, can be attributed to the R-PO 3 2− symmetric and asymmetric stretches.…”

“…[18] The fact that no feature of the S 2p 3/2 component is detected at higher energies (e.g. S 2p 3/2 for sulfinates -SO 2 − and sulfonates -SO 3 − , typically found at 165.5 and 168.0 eV) suggests that, after the grafting process, most sulfur atoms located on the surface are involved in C-S-C bonds or, at least, are not bonded to oxygen atoms.…”

“…Protein adsorption and cell adhesion are reduced on the phosphorylcholine-assembled surfaces. With the intention of producing well-controlled surfaces on oxide, chlorosilanes [204], hydroxamic acid [205], carboxylic acids [206], and phosphoric and phosphonic acids [207][208][209][210] have been proposed as SAMs molecules.…”
