Ultrathin Glass for the Photovoltaic Applications

Abstract: Chemically strengthened ultrathin glass with a thickness of less than 1 mm has many advantages, such as flexibility, smooth surface, good transmittance, excellent gas and water barrier, much higher toughened in relations to thermally tempered glass, higher impact resistance, increased corrosion resistance and much higher abrasion rate. Chemical strengthening process is a process where an ion exchange occurs by diffusion between the glass panes and the brine solution bath. The deeper penetration of the glass su… Show more

“…Thermal strengthening is dominating but is less suitable for thin glass (i.e., below 2 mm) whereas chemical strengthening (hereinafter called CS) has reached wide market success, especially for electronic handheld devices [5], pharmaceutical autoinjectors [8], aircraft windshields [8] and high-speed trains [9]. However, CS has also found applications in other market segments, e.g., photovoltaics [10][11][12], automotive [13], wine glasses (e.g., the Stem Zero collection from Nude Glass), architectural applications [14] and flexible photonics [15].…”

“…Freestanding ultrathin glasses with the thickness of micrometers have been paid much attention in recent years due to their outstanding characteristics in terms of flexibility, transparency, surface smoothness, gas barrier capability, and so on. 15,16 It possesses high potential for applications such as electronics, vehicles, lighting, and so on. [17][18][19] Their application of ultrathin glass is still in the category for manufacturing electronic devices and products.…”
