Ultrathin endoscopes based on multicore fibers and adaptive optics: a status review and perspectives

Abstract: Abstract. We take stock of the progress that has been made into developing ultrathin endoscopes assisted by wave front shaping. We focus our review on multicore fiber-based lensless endoscopes intended for multiphoton imaging applications. We put the work into perspective by comparing with alternative approaches and by outlining the challenges that lie ahead.

“…Moreover, due to their low inter-core crosstalk levels, disordered MCFs exhibiting transverse Anderson localization 14,15 could also be proposed as a means to reduce the impact of the IMCD on some applications. In particular, disordered MCFs could be of extreme utility to improve the image quality in lensless endoscopy 50 . In the Supplementary Information we also analyse in Figs S4 and S5 the higher-order effects of the IMCD when including mode-coupling between orthogonal polarizations induced by the circular fiber birefringence.…”

This requires a comprehensive investigation of the optical beam propagation through the fibre, since any focussing or scanning at the sample site requires the beam to be shaped at the fibre proximal end.…”
