Ultrastructure of the dermal chromatophores in the Fringe-toed lizard, Acanthodactylus orientalis

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Histology and electron microscopic studies of the dorsal skin of the Fringe-toed lizard, Acanthodactylus orientalis Angel, 1936, showed three types of dermal chromatophores: xanthophores, iridophores and melanophores. These pigment cells were observed in vertical combination, with an uppermost layer of xanthophores, an intermediate layer of iridophores and a basal layer of melanophores. The ultrastructure of the melanophore is characterized by oval nucleus and numerous pigment granules, the melanosom… Show more

“…One of the most characteristic features of reptilian integument is the skin coloration. Different colors are produced by chromatophore cells that include epidermal melanocytes and dermal melanophores, erythrophores, and iridophores (Alibardi, 2003; Cooper & Greenberg, 1992; Kuriyama, Miyaji, Sugimoto, & Hasegawa, 2006; Paray & Al‐Sadoon, 2017; Rutland, Cigler, & Kubale Dvojmoč, 2019; Saenko, Teyssier, Van Der Marel, & Milinkovitch, 2013a; Szydłowski, Madej, & Mazurkiewicz‐Kania, 2017).…”
