“…The findings of fibrillation in rats given corticosteroids were consistent with those in baboons, where the condylar cartilage attained a grossly fibrillated appearance after biweekly intra-articular injections of 20 mg of glucocorticoids (10). Findings obtained by quantitative electron microscopy indicate that lower daily doses (1-5 mg/kg body weight) of steroids administered intramuscularly also induce degenerative changes of the chondrocytes, including pyknotic nuclei and reduced rough endoplasmic reticula (24). According to WEISS et al (11), glucocorticoids interfere with the anabolic activities of cartilage cells by inhibiting cartilage cell prohferation, by reducing RNA and protein synthesis, and by decreasing the synthesis of proteoglycans.…”

“…Most early in vivo experiments showed that corticosteroids, especially after intra-articular administration, may provoke or worsen cartilage lesions. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] However, a systematic review of these reports shows that degeneration of articular cartilage, resulting from steroid administration, occurred after the administration of unrealistically high doses of this hormone. Similarly, Charcot-like arthropathy has been reported in man after a series of about 20 intra-articular injections of steroids.…”

“…Chandler et al ( 1958aChandler et al ( , 1958b studied the effects of intraarticular injections of corticosteroids on articular cartilage and observed that in a number of cases, the functional improvement was accompanied by excessive and accelerated destruction of the joints. It is now generally accepted that local and systemic administration of corticosteroids affect the structure and function of the articular cartilage (Behrens 1975and 1976, Higuchi et al 1980, Mankin and Conger 1966, Shaw and Lacey 1973. In addition, local administration of hydrocortisone was also found to produce destructive changes in the meniscus.…”
