Ultrastructure of glycogen‐rich clear cell carcinoma of the palate

Abstract: Abstract. Tissues from four local recurrences of a palatal tumor and regional lymph node metastases were studied by light microscopy while ultrastructural observations were made on the most recent tumor. The tumor was composed of solid sheets, clumps, and small nests of polyhedral epithelial cells with well‐defined cell boundaries, clear cytoplasm, and cellular pleomorphism. Histochemical stains indicated the presence of abundant intracellular glycogen deposits in all tumor specimens examined. Ultrastructural… Show more

“…Historical case reports and series emphasized the absence of mucocytes and negative mucicarmine staining in HCCC, [9][10][11]16,19,21,22,27,28,39,43,46,48,[55][56][57][58][59][60] despite the presence of mucin-positive neoplastic cells in the Milchgrub et al 1 initial series. Mucocytes, focal ductal differentiation, presence of cystic spaces, and even rare foci of keratinization are now reported to be features of EWSR1-rearranged HCCC.…”

“…HCCC characteristics were compared with other salivary gland carcinomas presenting to our institution using nonparametric Mann–Whitney U test for continuous variables, or Fisher exact test for dichotomous variables. Clinical outcomes of our cases combined with that of 99 reported HCCCs with available follow‐up from primary resection, were plotted using the Kaplan–Meier method. Duplicate (previously reported) cases were excluded.…”

“…Neoplastic epithelial cells were polyhedral to cuboidal in shape with well-defined cell boundaries, clear cytoplasm, and cellular pleomorphism ( Fig. 8) (Mohamed 1976;Batsakis 1979). Undifferentiated carcinoma is a malignant tumor of epithelial structure that is too poorly differentiated to be placed in any of the other groups of carcinoma.…”

“…Moderate amounts of glycogen can, however, be found in squamous cell carcinoma as in the present study. Some carcinomas, for example clear cell carcinoma of the palate, may have a high content of glycogen (14).…”
