Ultrastructural Tail Defects in the Spermatozoa From Two Men Attending a Subfertility Clinic

Abstract: Similar ultrastructural defects were found in the spermatozoa of two oligospermic men attending a subfertility clinic. The majority of spermatozoa had a mid-piece of grossly abnormal morphology and the diameter of the tail was increased, due to an excess of outer-sheath fibres. Extra, as well as missing, axial-filament fibres were also seen. In both cases, only a very small proportion of the spermatozoa were motile.A testicular biopsy was performed on each man and although the histological appearance was norma… Show more

“…There have been only 6 reports (11 cases) [3][4][5][6][7][8] on human short-tailed spermatozoa since the first report by Ross et al [3] in 1971. In 9 of these cases, the ultrastruc ture of the spermatozoa was studied using electron mi croscopy.…”

“…In 9 of these cases, the ultrastruc ture of the spermatozoa was studied using electron mi croscopy. In the reported cases of short-tailed spermato zoa [3][4][5][6][7][8], the semen concentration was almost normal, the spermatozoa were alive but immotile. Electron-micro scopic observation is important for the diagnosis of short tailed spermatozoa, because it is difficult to distinguish a short tail from a coil tail with light microscopy.…”
