“…The structure and development of follicles in S. mitranus has been reconstructed as shown in the Figure . In general, the structure of the germinal beds and some cytoplasmic and nuclear features of oogonia and early oocytes in S. mitranus are similar to those described for other lizards (Arronet, ; Bou‐Resli, ; Filosa & Taddei, ; Hubert, , , ; Hubert, ; Hubert, ; Klosterman, ; Klosterman, ). However, in L. sicula , the presence of cytoplasmic bridges has been reported between the developing oogonia in the germinal bed (Filosa & Taddei, ).…”

“…Hubert () proposed a model for granulosa cell differentiation in L. vivipara , which was later applied to other lizard species (Hubert, ; Klosterman, ). In contrast to Bou‐Resli () who attributed mitotic activity to small and intermediate cells, most reports suggest that this is not the case and only small cells are observed in mitosis (Betz, ; Hubert, ; Hubert, ). In fact, it has been shown by measuring DNA content in the granulosa cells in follicles at different stages in the two species L. sicula and G. coeruleus that DNA was synthesized only in the small cells (Klosterman, ; Olmo & Taddei, ).…”

“…This layer contains small follicle cells, intermediate cells and large "pyriform cells" so called because of their shape. The pyriform cells represent, in the vertebrates studied so far, a unique case of communication between follicle cells and oocyte through intercellular bridges (Ghiara et al 1968;Neaves 1971;Taddei 1972;Bou-Resly 1974;Hubert 1976). Furthermore, in Podarcis sicula, these peculiar follicle cells differentiate from small follicle cells through intermediate cells (Filosa et al 1979), the heterologous fusion of somatic follicle cells with the oocyte preceding their differentiation into intermediate and pyriform cells (Andreuccetti et al 1978).…”
