This paper examines the relationship between parasite infection rates and reproductive function in wild Iberian ibexes. The animals examined were 43 adult males shot during the rutting season. Gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes, intestinal cestodes and intestinal coccidia were determined by coprological analysis. Protozoa in the muscles were detected by biopsy. Epididymal spermatozoa were collected from recovered testes. Sperm motility, the integrity of the plasma membrane, sperm viability, sperm morphology and acrosome integrity were all evaluated. Bronchopulmonary nematode larvae were detected with a prevalence of 100% (mean intensity 216.8±65.8; index of dispersion 476.1, indicating an aggregated pattern). A negative correlation (R=-0.39; P<0.05) was found between the shedding of larval lungworms and the percentage of sperm morphological abnormalities. Although directional relationships could not be identified, the present findings suggest that reproductive effort imposes a cost in terms of depressed parasite resistance.

A parasitological survey was performed on 51 adult male Spanish ibexes (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) from Málaga (Andalucía, Southern Spain) which were legally hunted during rutting season (October to December) in 2002 and 2003, in order to determine the health status of the ibex populations. Animals were classified according to horn quality and geographic location and their respective parasite levels were compared. Gastrointestinal and pulmonary (family Protostrongylidae) nematodes (order Strongylida), intestinal cestodes (family Anoplocephalidae: Moniezia expansa and M. benedeni) and intestinal coccidia (Eimeria spp) were detected by coprological analysis, and muscle protozoa (Sarcocystis spp) by muscle biopsy. A parasitism index (PI) was calculated for each animal and parasite group. A horn index (HI) was designed that classified animals into four categories: HI 1 (good), HI 2 (normal), HI 3 (poor) and HI 4 (very poor). There was a negative correlation (R = -0.262; P = 0.062) between the PI of lungworms (Protostrongylidae) and HI, high lungworm PIs corresponded with lower HI values (better horn characteristics). Linear correlations between arcsine transformed parasite counts and one principal component analysis (PCA) of horn measures were calculated. There was a correlation (R = 0.30; P = 0.03) between lungworm larval shedding (Protostrongylidae) and PCA for horn quality. High larval counts corresponded with high PCA values (better horn quality). The possibility of rut stress affecting dominant males is proposed as a predisposing factor for the observed trend.Additional key words: coprological analysis; digestive, lung and muscle parasites; horn measurement index; index of parasitism; muscle biopsy. Sheep (Ovis aries) are intermediate hosts for at least six named species of Sarcocystis: S. tenella, S. arieticanis, S. gigantea, S. medusiformis, S. mihoensis, and S. microps. Here, only two species, S. tenella and S. arieticanis, were found in 79 of 86 sheep (91.9%) in Kunming, China, based on their morphological characteristics. Four genetic markers, i.e., 18S rRNA gene, 28S rRNA gene, mitochondrial cox1 gene, and ITS-1 region, were sequenced and characterized for the two species of Sarcocystis. Sequences of the three former markers for S. tenella shared high identities with those of S. capracanis in goats, i.e., 99.0%, 98.3%, and 93.6%, respectively; the same three marker sequences of S. arieticanis shared high identities with those of S. hircicanis in goats, i.e., 98.5%, 96.5%, and 92.5%, respectively. No sequences in GenBank were found to significantly resemble the ITS-1 regions of S. tenella and S. arieticanis. Identities of the four genetic markers for S. tenella and S. arieticanis were 96.3%, 95.4%, 82.5%, and 66.2%, respectively.
