“…Autoradiographic studies have demonstrated tifat sulphate is mainly incorporated into submucosal glands and tritiated glucose is taken up predominantly by epithelial cells (Gallagher, Hall, Jeffery, Phipps & Richardson, 1978). Nerve fibres, believed on ultrastructural grounds to be cholinergic, have been observed adjacent to the mucous and serous cells of the cat tracheal submucosal glands (Silva & Ross, 1974;Murlas, Nadel & Basbaum, 1980), while epithelial secretary cells such as goblet cells are not thought to be innervated (Florey et al 1932). The radiolabelling pattern (rich in 35S, poor in 3H) of secretions collected in response to vagal stimulation can be explained if they originate mainly from the submucosal glands.…”

“…Bronchioles of rabbits, sheep, pigs, goats, and bulls are reported to have no adrenergic innervation (Mann, 1971). However, there is no general agreement about sympathetic innervation of the bronchiolar smooth muscle of the cat (Silva and Ross, 1974). Cat bronchioles have been reported to contain /?-2 receptors (Lulich et al, 1976).…”

“…The previous reports have often included strong statements on the density or otherwise of the innervation (e.g. Silva & Ross, 1974) but none have contained quantitative estimates of the density. The previously published micrographs have concentrated on the nerves, and few have included large regions of muscle in order to place the nerves in perspective.…”
