Ultrastructural alterations induced by the neolignan dihydrobenzofuranic eupomatenoid-5 on epimastigote and amastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi

Abstract: Eupomatenoid-5, a compound isolated from leaves of Piper regnellii var. pallescens, showed antiprotozoal activity against the epimastigote proliferative stages and intracellular amastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi Y strain. Eupomatenoid-5, at 7.0 microg/ml (50% growth inhibition concentration) produced morphological changes in epimastigote forms of the parasite, such as intense cytoplasmic vacuolization, mitochondrial swelling, kinetoplast alteration, presence of myelin-like figures, and mitochondrial damage… Show more

“…with different inhibitors of sterol synthesis led to alterations in the organization of chromatin and to the presence of myelinlike figures and autophagosome-like structures suggesting the involvement of an autophagic cell death process (Lazardi et al, 1990;Vannier-Santos et al, 1995;Braga et al, 2004;Granthon et al, 2007;Rodrigues et al, 2007). In epimastigotes, the natural neolignan dihydrobenzofuranic eupomatenoid-5 induced characteristic features of an autophagic process (Luize et al, 2006). Our images obtained from the treatment of T. cruzi with different drugs showed alterations indicative of different cell death pathways.…”
