Ultrasound Wave Attenuation of Grain Refined High – Zinc Aluminium Sand-cast Alloys

Abstract: The paper presents results of measuring attenuation coefficient of the Al-20 wt.% Zn alloy (AlZn20) inoculated with different grain refiners. During experiments the melted alloys were doped with Al-Ti3-C0.15 refining master alloy. Basing on measurements performed by Krautkramer USLT2000 device with 1MHz ultrasound wave frequency it was stated that grain refinement reduces the attenuation coefficient by about 20-25%. However, the examined alloys can be still classified as the high-damping ones of attenuation gr… Show more

“…It can be changed, however, in the process of alloy modification, a process which usually affects the volume and number of precipitation of a specific compound or the size of grain. The inoculant's impact on the alloy structure is reflected in the change of the damping coefficient value of a specific alloy [5][6][7]. The cooling rate, apart from modification process, can also affect the macro and microstructure of the alloy by the changing shape and grain size of the phases [8][9][10].…”

“…These alloys have peritectic reactions that aid the heterogeneous nucleation which results in finer dendritic structure. Krajewski [12] added different ratios of Ti and found that damping coefficients were remained almost unchanged after 25 ppm Ti. Li [13] added Sc and Zr as grain refiner and modifier and found that 0.5wt% Sc was enough to grain refine 10 times.…”

“…One of the common additions in these alloys is copper, which builds so called bearing phases with zinc in sliding-bearing parts. It increases strength but also leads to the formation of the metastable ε CuZn 4 phase, which undergoes a very slow transformation to the stable T' phase Al 5 Cu 4 Zn, accompanied by significant dimensional changes [1][2][3]. For this reason Cu content should be reduced to about 3 wt.…”
