Ultrasound probe use and reprocessing: Results from a national survey among U.S. infection preventionists

Abstract: Infection preventionists are well placed to act as major drivers of change based on their expertise and experience in the management of infection risk across facilities and health systems. They, along with clinicians responsible for probe use and reprocessing, should review practices relating to ultrasound in their facilities. Where practice does not comply with guidelines, policy and training should be updated to ensure patient safety.

“…Moreover, 11% declared they cleaned the probe at the end of the session only, without any further cleaning procedure between two TVS scans 6 . In contrast, in a recently-published national questionnaire survey in the USA, most (96%) infection preventionists declared adequate compliance with HLD after endocavitary scan in their facility 9 . In our experience (data not shown), compliance with local guidelines did not match with what was expected based on local protocols implemented by infection preventionists.…”

Ninety-seven respondents (7%) worked for outpatient facilities, 18 respondents (1%) worked in other types of facilities including home health, and 6 respondents did not indicate facility type.…”

“…[5][6][7] A 2017 survey of US infection preventionists (IPs) revealed variation in following these guidelines, with 22%-96% compliance depending on the procedure, which suggest that patients could be at increased risk for preventable infections. 8 In this project, we investigated ultrasound use and barriers to reprocessing probes at ambulatory sites.…”
