Ultrasound of myxofibrosarcoma

Abstract: The ultrasound appearance of myxofibrosarcoma is highly variable corresponding to its variable and at times heterogeneous histopathologic appearance. Myxofibrosarcomas may mimic a benign process and the infiltrative tumor margins may be difficult to precisely delineate on ultrasound imaging. These tumor characteristics pose a diagnostic challenge on ultrasound evaluation. The radiologist should be aware of the variable morphologic presentation and infiltrative nature of myxofibrosarcoma and the limitations of … Show more

“…[ 9 ] This tumor margin alteration can also be visualized by ultrasound, demonstrating a plate-like extension infiltrating the surrounding tissue. [ 10 ] Ultrasound is increasingly used to assess soft tissue masses for initial assessment due to its convenience, noninvasiveness, and absence of radiation. [ 11 ] Conventional ultrasound, when combined with CEUS, can provide additional diagnostic value by evaluating the perfusion pattern of soft tissue tumors.…”

“…In addition, US is ideal in directing cutaneous biopsies. In US, MFS reveals a predominantly hypoechoic heterogeneous [20]. The presence of tail-like extensions along the fascial layer or ill-defined echog changes in the adjacent subcutaneous fat may be identified.…”
