Ultrasound lung comets induced by repeated breath‐hold diving, a study in underwater fishermen

Abstract: Pulmonary edema has been reported in breath-hold divers during fish-catching diving activity. The present study was designed to detect possible increases in extravascular lung water (EVLW) in underwater fishermen after a competition. Thirty healthy subjects were studied. They participated in two different 5-h fish-catching diving competitions: one organized in the winter (10 subjects) and one organized in the autumn (20 subjects). A questionnaire was used to record underwater activity and note respiratory prob… Show more

“…In a spearfishing competition similar to that studied here, Boussuges et al. () reported a mean weight loss of 1.5 kg mainly through dehydration and so the hemoconcentration measured in our study (APN‐D) could be an artifact of dehydration. Another explanation is splenic contraction in response to exercise (Laub et al.…”

“…Adults Agricola et al obtained intra-and inter-observer variability of 3.1 % and 4.4 %, on 280 scans performed by two operators [31]. Boussuges et al obtained interobserver variability < 5%, on 1890 scans performed by two operators [34]. Fagenholz et al obtained "excellent agreement" on 308 scans [35].…”
