Ultrasound‐guided sciatic nerve block at the midthigh level in a porcine model: A descriptive study

Abstract: Background and Objective There are a growing number of porcine models being used for orthopaedic experiments for human beings. Therefore, pain management of those research pigs using ultrasound (US)‐guided nerve block can be usefully performed. The aim of this study is to determine optimal US approaches for accessing and localizing the sciatic nerve at the midthigh level, a relevant block site for hindlimb surgery in female Yorkshire pigs. Methods As a first step, we di… Show more

“…In recent years, with the development of ultrasound technology, its application in internal medicine has become more and more extensive, which also provides support for the application in the anatomical positioning of nerve block anesthesia. Using ultrasound guidance, not only can accurately locate but also facilitate the observation of drug diffusion [19].…”

“…The role of ultrasound-guided lumbar plexus block and ultrasound-guided sciatic nerve block alone has been well established in hip surgery [ 15 , 16 ]. However, few studies were founded on the combination of ultrasound-guided lumbar plexus block and sciatic nerve block in the hip replacement.…”

“…Guided by ultrasound in local block, the doctors can clearly see the nerve structure and the blood vessels, muscles, bones, and visceral structures around the nerve. In the process of needle insertion, real-time images of needle movement can be provided to better approach the target structure [ 10 12 ], which is conducive to the smooth implementation of surgery.…”
