Ultrasound-Guided Needle Aspiration of Peritonsillar Abscesses: Utility of Transoral Pharyngeal Ultrasonography

Abstract: A peritonsillar abscess is a common deep infection that is usually related to acute tonsillitis. Needle aspiration is often performed for diagnosis and treatment, but several complications, including puncture of the carotid artery, may occur, even when performed by properly trained physicians. The utility of transoral pharyngeal ultrasonography (TOPU) equipped with a biopsy adaptor for safe and full aspiration is presented. A 19-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of a peritonsillar abscess. TOPU… Show more

“…Проведение трансорального ультразвукового исследования глотки позволило исключить признаки формирующегося абсцесса в паратонзиллярной области [13,14]. В представленном клиническом наблюдении ветви наружной сонной артерии в паратонзиллярной клетчатке располагались на глубине до 10 мм, исследование проводилось в области наибольшего выбухания.…”

“…POCUS has also been shown to be effective in the drainage of peritonsillar abscesses; it is actually associated with lower complication rates compared to blind incision and drainage procedures, considering the fact that it provides real-time imaging of the abscess and the arteries and therefore improves the safety of the procedure, especially when the volume of pus is small [ 56 , 85 ].…”
