Ultrasound-guided Foam Sclerotherapy Combined with Sapheno-femoral Ligation Compared to Surgical Treatment of Varicose Veins: Early Results of a Randomised Controlled Trial

Abstract: Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy combined with sapheno-femoral ligation was less expensive, involved a shorter treatment time and resulted in more rapid recovery compared to sapheno-femoral ligation, saphenous stripping and phlebectomies.

“…11 Bountouroglou DG et al found a obliteration rate of 89% in surgey and 78% in foam sclerotherapy group after 12 month of frollow up. 26 High obliteration rate found in our study may be explained by very short time of follow up in our study compared to above studies and another reason may be the use of catheter guided foam sclerotherapy in our study which is more efficacious than conventional sclerotheray. 27 We also did not found any case of recanalization of vein with reflux in both groups which we considered as failure of treatment.…”

“…Boudouroglou prospectively compared in a randomized study, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy with crossectomy under local anaesthesia (n 录 30), with surgical treatment of varicose veins along the distribution of the GSV system (n 录 30). 9 All patients were suitable for day case surgery. Surgical treatment included saphenofemoral ligation, stripping of the long saphenous vein to the knee level and multiple phlebectomies.…”
