Ultrasound‐guided fine needle aspiration cytology of gallbladder lesions: a study of 596 cases

Abstract: The present study is the largest series evaluating the role of US-guided FNA in the diagnosis of gallbladder lesions. It is a safe, rapid, reliable, cost-effective and reasonably accurate method for diagnosing gallbladder lesions. FNA should always be attempted in cases with a mass lesion.

“…The high frequency of local advancement of the disease demands its rapid diagnosis as it changes the modality of management and prognosis. Unlike previous reports which were based only on cytomorphology, 9,10,12,15 we confirmed the morphological impression by demonstration of neuroendocrine markers on cell block immunocytochemistry which makes this report novel and affirmative. The indication of USG-FNAC in each case was based on clinical suspicion and radiological findings of gallbladder fossa mass, gallbladder wall thickening with or without liver infiltration, all of which are suggestive of GB malignancy.…”

“…Our institute is located in a high incidence region. 9 The most common malignancy of the gallbladder diagnosed on FNA was adenocarcinoma, NOS (96.3%) followed by other uncommon variants of carcinoma. The average age of gallbladder cancer previously reported from a series from India was 52 years, 8 which is close to the average age in our study of 54.3 years.…”
