Ultrasound‐guided core needle biopsy for the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma in childhood

Abstract: In the hands of experienced operators, image-guided needle biopsies of RMSs allow for accurate diagnosis, allow sufficient material to be obtained for supplementary studies and research, and are associated with minimal morbidity.

“…Also CN is well tolerated by the patient, cost effective and relatively easy to perform [2,16]. In addition, CN biopsies provide better information on the architecture of the tumor tissue, as well as more reliable material for ancillary techniques such as immunohistochemistry, FISH and RT-PCR.…”

“…[ 5 ] In some institutions, image-guided needle biopsy is the favorable method for the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma by providing sufficient material with minimal morbidity in spite of the fact that open-surgical incisional biopsy is often recommended by others. [ 6 ] Our first patient was unfortunate to have the alveolar type in addition to the approximate 2-week delay in her tissue diagnosis because of nonrepresentative incisional biopsy. She might have benefitted from such a technique that was advocated by Chowdhury et al .…”

“…COG intermediate risk protocols also entertain the possibility of transperineal percutaneous biopsy for B/P RMS. Several studies have suggested that the core needle biopsies can produce accurate results in the majority of pediatric neoplasms and provide adequate tissue for ancillary studies (32,33). The authors experience would suggest that very careful planning with active involvement of institutional pathologists is required for this approach, lest inadequate tissue for diagnosis or ancillary studies be obtained.…”
