Ultrasound examination of the liver: Variations in the vascular anatomy

Abstract: The hepatic vasculature is highly complex. The hepatic artery (a branch of the celiac tripod) and the portal vein (formed by the confluence of the splenic and superior mesenteric veins) provide a dual blood supply while venous drainage is guaranteed by the hepatic veins. There are also numerous anatomic variants that can involve one or more of the system's three components.Hepatic artery variants are the least common. Ten types have been identified, including several that are fairly frequent and others that ar… Show more

“…These two variants account for the majority of main portal vein variation. In our study, 23% of patients had a variant portal vein anatomy, which is significantly greater than the 10%-15% described in early published data from two sonography literatures 6,7 which is still widely quoted but consistent with the range of 20% to 35% of the population as published in an article. 8 In our cohort, 23.1% of the patients had either trifurcation (type 2) or Z (type 3) anatomy, of which fifteen patients (9.9%) had what we considered a single right posterior branch arising as the first branch of the right portal vein.…”

“…Some researchers believe that ultrasound is always the method of choice for the diagnosis of various hepatobiliary diseases. They recommend a perfect study and a good understanding of the sonographic appearance of the normal hepatic vascular tree and its anatomical variations [3].…”

“…In recent years, the prenatal diagnosis of the structural abnormalities of fetal HVS have been increasedly causing concern in the clinical practice [22][23][24][25][26]. The variants and the abnormalities of fetal HVS have a lot of similarities in anatomy, but the outcomes of them are greatly different.…”
