An ethnicity-based reference range for normal renal size is fundamental for ultrasonographic assessment. Herein, we aimed to establish a Chinese renal reference by a large sample size, as well as to elucidate the relationship of renal dimension to age and body indices, with the aid of a comprehensive literature review. Records of 3707 healthy cases were obtained from health evaluation centers of Kaohsiung and Linkuo Chang Gung Memorial Hospitals. As a result, the mean right renal length was 10.62±0.69 cm, left renal length 10.76±0.70 cm, right renal width 4.78±0.75 cm, and left renal width 5.10±0.64 cm. Renal size was well-correlated curvilinearly to age, while linearly to body height, body weight, and body mass index. Renal size increases and then decreases with aging, and significant variations of renal size exist among different ethnicities. Our work provides a reliable reference range for renal size in the Chinese population, and valid relationships between renal dimensions and other parameters.

In persons with normal renal function, renal length has been found to be the most important marker for assessing renal function. Ultrasound is readily available, non invasive and provides a direct and easy method of determining renal length. The aim of this study is to determine the range of normal renal measurements among the students of College of Health Sciences, BUK. Renal lengths of apparently healthy volunteered students were measured using Mindray DP 3.5MHz curvilinear transducer. Maximum bipolar length for each kidney was measured with participants in supine position. Differences between renal length with age and gender was assessed while its relationship with BMI were assessed statistically for right and left kidneys. A total of 201 consenting participants were recruited into the study. Average mean bipolar length among the student's was established to be 9.28±0.94cm and 9.42±1.02cm for the right and left kidneys respectively. Mean renal length in males was found to be 9.51 ± 1.11cm for the left and 9.47 ± 0.93cm for the right which are slightly higher than those of the females 9.29 ± 0.87cm for the left and 9.07 ± 0.91cm for the right. The left kidneys were longer than the right kidneys. The mean renal length di not correlate with age and BMI. Nomogram of renal dimension among students of BUK were established. This will form basis for renal diagnosis especially for health Institutions like the BUK health services.

Introduction: Ultrasound is an important imaging modality used in the prognosis and diagnosis of renal conditions and diseases and also in the evaluation of kidney donors. This study aimed at providing a reference for the normal metric variables of the kidney such kidney lengths of healthy Nigerian adults in Lagos State and to compare with previously obtained results.Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in the radiology department of Ikorodu Hospital. This study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional study design with a cluster sampling approach which consisted of 150 adults (with 300 kidneys) participants ages 18-87 years. Real-time gray-scale ultrasonic scanning using Prosound 3500 Aloka device and a 3.5–5 MHz curvilinear explorer was employed for the abdominal imaging. The data acquired were compiled and explored via the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The student’s t-test was utilized in probing for statistical significance between age as well as gender in relation to renal length. P-value < 0.05 was adjudged to be significant.Results: The kidney length was of a greater distance in males, and the length of the left kidney was more extensive than that of the right kidney in both sexes. Average kidney length was greater on the left when compared to the right among the various age groups. No significant association was noted between kidney length and age as well as gender.Conclusions: Normal values for kidney length and diversifications in the kidney length of healthy adults in Nigeria have been established.
