This study aimed at investigating the effects of broccoli residues fermented with probiotics (BF) on the growth performance, immunity, and gut health in broilers challenged with Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens). A total of 600 broilers (one day old) were randomly allotted into five treatments with six replicates of 20 birds each and were reared until 42 days of age. The treatments included a positive control (PC, fed a basal diet and reared on uncontaminated litter), a negative control (NC, birds reared on litter contaminated with C. perfringens and fed a basal diet), and NC plus BF at 25, 50 or 75 g/kg of diet. The BF contained yeast 3.1 × 10 7 cfu/g, lactic acid bacteria 9.5 × 10 6 cfu/g and Bacillus subtilis 3.5 × 10 6 cfu/g. Birds in the NC group showed lower (p<0.05) feed intake and body weight gain, whereas BF supplementation recovered (p<0.05) the growth performance to the levels of PC group. Dietary BF at 50and 75 g/kg reduced (p<0.05) broiler mortality. Similarly, compared to the NC group, BF increased (p<0.05) immune organ weights and serum immunoglobulins A, G, and M to the levels of PC group. The ileal populations of Escherichia coli and Gram-negative bacteria were decreased (p<0.05) by BF to the levels of PC, and C. perfringens was also decreased (p<0.05) by BF. The serum profiles of mono-and di-amine oxidase were decreased (p<0.05) by BF. BF at 75 g/kg reduced (p<0.05) monoamine oxidase compared with the other BF doses. The results suggest that broccoli residues fermented with probiotics can be a novel biological feed additive to protect the performance and health of broilers against C. perfringens infection.

Purpose: Nanoporous membranes have been employing more than before in applications such as biomedical due to nanometer hexagonal pores array. Biofouling is one of the important problems in these applications that used nanoporous membranes and are in close contact with microorganisms. Surface modification of the membrane is one way to prevent biofilm formation; therefore, the membrane made in this work is modified with carbon nanotubes. Methods: In this work, nanoporous solid-state membrane (NSSM) was made by a two-step anodization method, and then modified with carbon nanotubes (NSSM-multi-wall carbon nanotubes [MWCNT]) by a simple chemical reaction. Techniques such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDAX), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle (CA), surface free energy (SFE), protein adsorption, flow cytometry, and MTT assay were used for membrane characterization. Results: The BSA protein adsorption capacity reduced from 992.54 to 97.24 (μg mL-1 cm-2) after modification. The findings of flow cytometry and MTT assay confirmed that the number of dead bacteria was higher on the NSSM-MWCNT surface than that of control. Adsorption models of Freundlich and Langmuir and kinetics models were studied to understand the governing mechanism by which bacteria migrate to the membrane surface. Conclusion: The cell viability of absorbed bacteria on the NSSM-MWCNT was disrupted in direct physical contact with carbon nanotubes. Then, the dead bacteria were desorbed from the surface of the hydrophilic membrane. The results of this research showed that NSSM-MWCNT containing carbon nanotubes have significant antimicrobial and self-cleaning property that can be used in many biomedical devices without facing the eminent problem of biofouling.

A new Fe(III)/MOF-5(Ni) catalyst with high hydrostability was prepared using an equal load method under room temperature, and nearly 100% selectivity for catechol and 63.2% yield of dihydroxybenzene were obtained in hydroxylation of phenol with H 2 O 2 over Fe(III)/MOF-5(Ni) catalyst.A new Fe(III)/MOF-5(Ni) catalyst was prepared using an equal load method under room temperature. The Fe(III)/MOF-5(Ni) was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Brunauer À Emmett À Teller (BET) measurements, infrared spectra (IR) and X-MaxN Energy spectrum. The results showed that by adding Ni into the [Zn 4 O] metal frame of MOF-5 to partially replace Zn, the formed metal coordination group [Ni 4 O(BDC) 3 ] enhanced the hydrostability of MOF-5(Ni).The catalytic activity was evaluated for phenol hydroxylation with hydrogen peroxide (30%). Compared with 2%Fe(III)/MOF-5, the yield of dihydroxybenzene greatly increased to 63.2% from 37% and the selectivity for catechol reached near 100% over 2%Fe(III)/ MOF-5(Ni)a with the Zn 2 + :Ni 2 + molar ratio 1:1, at lower reaction temperature 80°C, reaction time 2 h and catalyst to phenol mass ratio 0.053. It proved that the loading of both Ni and Fe 3 + into MOF-5 greatly increased the catalytic activity for the hydroxylation of phenol with hydrogen peroxide, and the plausible reaction mechanism of phenol hydroxylation with H 2 O 2 over Fe(III)/MOF-5(Ni) catalyst was also proposed.
