Ultrasound-Assisted Catalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange with Fe3O4/Polyaniline in Near Neutral Solution

Abstract: An ultrasound-assisted advanced oxidation process (AOP) has been demonstrated for sonocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) with Fe 3 O 4 /polyaniline (Fe 3 O 4 /PANI) microspheres in near neutral solution (pH ~6). The Fe 3 O 4 /PANI microspheres were characterized with XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, and zeta-potential measurements, and further tested in the role of adsorption and sonocatalytic decolorization of MO in solution. The isotherms and kinetics of MO adsorption with Fe 3 O 4 /PANI follow the Langmu… Show more

“…in the rst step. 56,57 The compounds subsequently underwent a further attack by cOH radicals to form smaller molecular compounds including aniline (m/z ¼ 93), benzoquinone (m/z ¼ 108), nitrobenzene (m/ z ¼ 123), p-nitrophenol (m/z ¼ 140), 2,5-dinitrophenol (m/z ¼ 183), acetic acid (m/z ¼ 60), succinic acid (m/z ¼ 118), oxalic acid (m/z ¼ 90) etc. and eventually converted into inorganic ions (e.g.…”

“…NH 4 + , NO 3 À , and SO 4 2À ), carbon dioxide and water. [56][57][58][59] As the degradation pathway of MO in Fenton-like reaction has been extensively investigated in many researches, the possible intermediate products were not qualitatively analyzed in this study. More detailed studies will be required to investigate the degradation pathway in the near future.…”

“…Although it is believed that TiO 2 as one of the most important applied workhorse heterogeneous photocatalyst degrades azo dyes thoroughly with unrivalled efficiency but it cannot absorb sun light and possesses impeded efficiency and restricted in utilization as a visible light photocatalyst due to its wide band gap (e g = 3.2 eV for anatase) 8 . To alleviate this limitation many reports have been appeared and directed reinforcement in the catalytic performance of the photocatalyst under visible light/ambient conditions 9 , 10 . Towards this goal, the developed quantised technologies are still under thriving strategies and limits it’s practical applications.…”
