Ultrasound Assisted Adsorptive Removal of Cr, Cu, Al, Ba, Zn, Ni, Mn, Co and Ti from Seawater Using Fe2O3-SiO2-PAN Nanocomposite: Equilibrium Kinetics

Abstract: This work reports the preparation and application of Fe2O3-SiO2-PAN nanocomposite for the removal of Cr3+, Cu2+, Al3+, Ba2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Co2+, and Ti3+ from seawater. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) characterized the synthesized composite. The following experimental parameters (Extraction time, adsorbent mass and pH) affecting the removal of major and trace metals… Show more

“…Which has the involvement of valence force by electron exchange between the dyes and adsorbent. In addition, the half-adsorption time (t 1/2 ) is the required time to remove 50 % of the analyte of interest in equilibrium ( Ramutshatsha-Makhwedzha et al., 2019 ). Moreover, the affinity between the adsorbent and the dye is high.…”

“…When ultrasonic irradiation is applied, the interaction between the solute and the adsorbent is promoted, and mass transfer on the surface of the material is promoted, thus improving the adsorption efficiency ( Çatlıoğlu et al., 2021 ; Mashile et al., 2021 ). In the literature, the effects of ultrasonic irradiation on the adsorption of various contaminants from aqueous solutions have been documented ( Geaneth Pertunia et al., 2020 ; Gugushe et al., 2021 ; Madimetja and Nomngongo, 2019 ; Mpupa et al., 2020 ; Ramutshatsha-Makhwedzha et al., 2019 ).…”

“…Interaction between metal ions and an adsorbent in an aqueous solution is conventionally assisted by magnetic stirring. However, in recent years, ultrasound irradiation has extended more attention to numerous applications (Alimin et al, 2018;Alimin et al, 2022;Alimin et al, 2015;Ramutshatsha-Makhwedzha et al, 2019). It is believed that ultrasonic energy is powerful enough to assist not only metal ion uptake by an adsorbent but also metal ion reduction onto adsorbent such as CNFs (Alimin et al, 2018;Alimin et al, 2022;Alimin et al, 2015).…”

“…This approach makes it possible to impart hydrophobic properties to PAN-based materials while maintaining the inherent vapor-and air-permeability of PAN, which is required for textile, medical purposes, and the production of fabrics with special-purpose and self-cleaning materials [7][8][9]. In addition, modification of PAN with silicon-containing components is used in the production of membranes and filters to change their permeability and selectivity [10][11][12][13][14]. A surface modification of PAN fibers with silicon-containing coupling agents to improve compatibility with the matrix in the manufacture of the polymer composites was investigated in [15].…”
