Ultrasonography: Sports Injuries

Abstract

Ultrasonography is a valuable imaging method to evaluate for sports injuries. In the upper extremity, rotator cuff evaluation is most common. Other applications include examination of the biceps and subacromial-subdeltoid bursa in the shoulder, biceps, triceps, common extensor tendon and ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow and tendon tear, pulley injury and skier’s thumb in the wrist and hand. In the lower extremity, ankle sprains, muscle injury and groin pain are the most common problems benefiting from imaging, and ultrasound plays a vital role. Tendinopathy, tendon injury and ligament injury are well visualised in the hip, knee, ankle and foot by diagnostic ultrasound.
