Ultrasonography of the Normal Pancreas

Abstract: Study of 135 ultrasonograms shows that it is possible to display the normal pancreas with 82% success. The pancreatic head ranges between 11 and 30/mm/in thickness, the isthmus 4-21 mm in thickness, and the corporeo-caudate area 24-32 mm in thickness. The pancreas may have a sausage, dumb-bell, or tadpole shape. Variance from these outlines and thicknesses should be considered pathological.

“…It may be regarded, however, as a convenient screening test for patients with suspected pancreas disease since no patient pre paration is required; it is painless and safe, and can be perform ed on an out-patient basis. Current progress in ultrasound technology has enhanced crosssectional imaging of the normal pancreas, and contact B mode scanning is especially useful for the visualisation of soft tissue tumors which are otherwise difficult to diagnose by radiologi cal techniques [2,3]. In this report a retroperitoneal malignant lymphoma is pre sented which was clearly demonstrated on radionuclide and ultrasonographic scans.…”

“…There is also a need for more population‐based studies to re‐define norms for pancreas size as stratified by age, BMI, ethnicity, and sex on the basis of established guidelines using modern imaging. While several studies using US and CT have reported pancreas size exclusively in normal individuals (Weill et al, ; de Graaff et al, ; Heuck et al, ; Ueda, ; Capaccioli and Carpi, ; Giandomenico et al, ; Nyren et al, ; Chen et al, ; Djuric‐Stefanovic et al, ), most of such studies did not use modern imaging methods, which have significantly improved resolution.…”

“…In the great majority of cases the diameter of the head does not exceed 30 mm and 20 mm in the body and tail (Weill et al, 1977) Any normal variation in size is gradual, and, conversely, an unexpectedly abrupt variation in contour, even if the size remains within normal limits, becomes significant (Fig. 2).…”
