Ultrasonography of the Normal Canine Gastrointestinal Tract

Abstract: The normal sonographic appearance of stomach, small bowel, and colon was determined in normal dogs of small, medium, and large breeds. In all dogs studied, the stomach wall ranged from 3 mm to 5 mm in thickness, and the small and large bowel wall ranged from 2 mm to 3 mm in thickness. Peristalsis was routinely observed in the sto-mach and small bowel, but not in the colon. Ultrasonic identification of five gastrointestinal wall layers corresponding to the mucosal surface, mucosa, submucosa, muscularis propria,… Show more

“…Because of reflection of the ultrasound waves at the soft tissue-air interface, the intestinal contents and the intestinal wall furthest from the transducer cannot be visualised. In contrast with results in dogs [42], there is no difference between the diameter of most of the small intestine before and after feeding in cattle. This uniformity is probably because the forestomachs constitute a feed reservoir and ingesta pass along the intestine continuously, independent of feed intake, and without changes in the diameter of the intestinal lumen, which would be measurable by ultrasonography.…”

“…The mean pyrolic contractions of saline and soup groups before feeding were 4.19 ± 1.30, 4.82 ± 0.65 per min and overall contractions during feeding were 4.66 ± 1.37, 5.13 ± 1.71 per min which is similar to the result of 4-5 frequency per min by Penninck's report [19].…”

“…In veterinary clinical medicine, ultrasonographic studies of canine stomach were mainly on the normal and abnormal morphology rather than the functional analysis [1,3,20,21]. But recent technical developments enable one to evaluate gastroduodenal motility by using ultrasonography, which is simple and noninvasive.…”

“…The reference range of duodenal wall thickness determined at the descending duodenal wall of 5 healthy beagles was 4.4 ± 0.2 mm (mean ± SD). In a previous study, normal values for small intestinal wall thickness measured by transabdominal ultrasonography were reported to be between 2 and 3 mm [6]. The descending duodenal wall thickness of dogs No.…”
