Ultrasonography as a Guiding Method in Breast Micro-Calcification Vacuum-Assisted Biopsies

Abstract: To assess the visibility of breast micro-calcifications using ultrasonography (US) and the accuracy and clinical usefulness of vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) using US guidance (USVAB) as compared to stereotactic guidance (SVAB). The study material comprised 158 retrospectively reviewed micro-calcification cases examined with US before VAB. The pre-biopsy US positivity frequency distributions were calculated, and the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of VAB determined by comparing VAB histology with the surgi… Show more

“…Stereotactic mammographic biopsy is suitable for micro-calcifications, distortions, and focal densities, but it is limited by weight and breast thickness restrictions. Keranen demonstrated that the accuracy and clinical usefulness of vacuum-assisted biopsy using US guidance for breast micro-calcifications was comparable to stereotactic guidance (Keranen, et al 2015). Radiological stereotactic and sonograms can also be used for preoperative localization by wire.…”

“…Breast calcification is a common manifestation in the breast cancer screening. A majority of calcifications are benign, while some may indicate the presence of early-stage breast cancer [1]. It is quite challenging to distinguish malignant calcifications from benign using current imaging techniques.…”

“…Percutaneous breast biopsy has become the foundation of diagnosing breast pathology, with most biopsies performed under imaging guidance [ 1 ]. With technological advancements in both imaging techniques and larger core biopsy devices, ultrasound (US)-guided biopsy is now widely applied to the majority of breast lesions, including microcalcifications and non-mass lesions [ 2 - 4 ]. The false-negative rate of 14-gauge US-guided core needle biopsy (CNB) ranges from 0.1% to 3.7%, which approaches that of open surgical biopsy [ 1 , 5 - 11 ].…”
