Ultrasonographic prevalence and characteristics of non-palpable thyroid incidentalomas in a hospital-based population in a sub-Saharan country

Abstract: BackgroundThyroid incidentalomas (TI) are highly prevalent asymptomatic thyroid nodules with ultrasound as the best imaging modality for their detection and characterization. Although they are mostly benign, potential for malignancy is up to 10–15%.In sub-Saharan Africa little data exists on the prevalence and risk categorization of TI. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and ultrasound characteristics of non-palpable thyroid incidentalomas among adults in sub-Saharan setting.MethodsA cross s… Show more

“…The gender disparity of the presence of TNs was in accordance with previous studies. 5 , 20 , 21 Interestingly, this study found a higher odds ratio (OR) of TNs (3.36, 95% confidence interval [CI] =1.97–5.75; P <0.001) in women compared with previous studies, which indicates a potentially increasing trend of gender disparity on TNs with age. Further studies are needed to verify this trend.…”

“…According to the previous studies, the prevalence of TNs in the senior population was 73.7% in People’s Republic of China, 54.9% in Korea, and 46.2% in Cameroon. 5 , 20 , 21 The differences in the prevalence may be due to age, gender, race, culture, dietary patterns, and iodine supplements. 7 , 22 , 23 …”

“…The gender disparity of the presence of TNs was in accordance with previous studies [5,19,20]. Interestingly, this study found a higher odds ratio of TNs (3.36, 95%CI = 1.97-5.75; P < 0.001) in females than previous studies, which indicates a potentially increasing trend of gender disparity on TNs with aging.…”

“…To our best knowledge, this is the first study to report prevalence of thyroid nodules among centenarians. According to the previous studies, the prevalence of TNs in senior population was 73.7% in China [5], 54.9% in Korea [19], and 46.2% in Cameroon [20]. The differences in the prevalence may be due to age, gender, race, culture, dietary patterns, and iodine supplements [7,21,22].…”

“…2 Some studies have also stated incidental findings of thyroid nodules on ultrasonography to be 50-67%. 3 Although gender is not an independent prognostic factor for thyroid cancer, men usually have a far more advanced disease as compared to women. 4 Previous radiation exposure though has a significant relation, thirty percent (30%) of patients who have previous history of radiation, develop palpable nodules and have a bad clinical outcome.…”
