Abstract. Four female Shiba goats were used to determine the influence of body weight loss by dietary restriction on estrous cyclicity. The dietary restriction was started on the day following ovulation. The goats were fed hay cube and straw at an amount of 30% of energy requirement based on weekly body weight measurement. The ovaries were monitored daily by transrectal ultrasonography and blood samples were collected daily by jugular venipuncture for ovarian steroids analysis. After the start of food restriction, all animals lost body weight and entered ovarian quiescence. Intervals to the onset of ovarian quiescence tended to depend on the body weight of each animal at the start of food restriction. The mean concentration of progesterone during the mid-luteal phase (from 7 to 13 days after ovulation) in the last estrous cycle before ovarian quiescence was significantly lower than that in normal estrous cycle of the control period (19.7 ± 2.8 vs 12.3 ± 2.2 ng/ml, P<0.05), whereas there was no significant difference in the length of the luteal phase, determined as the period when corpora lutea existed and concentrations of progesterone were equal to or greater than 1 ng/ml (15.8 ± 1.5 vs 15.0 ± 2.8 days, P>0.1). A rise of estradiol concentration and follicular growth in the follicular phase following a decline of progesterone level after luteal regression tended to be suppressed at the onset of ovarian quiescence. It seems that the present results are consistent with previous findings that nutritionally induced body weight loss influences the secretion of ovarian steroids and eventually induces ovarian quiescence.

This study aimed to characterize uterine involution and early ovarian postpartum activity in Sahelian goats. A total of 21 goats were allowed to nurse their kids and were examined every other day for complete uterine involution or daily for follicular development using a 5 MHz transrectal linear transducer. The obtained results indicated three phases of uterine regression, a fast involution phase (rates of 0.71 cm/day), a second moderate involution phase (0.17 cm/day), and a low rate of 0.14 cm/day that ended by day 22.44 ± 1.54. During the experiment, two goats showed an abnormal uterine involution and were excluded from the general profile. The 19 other goats exhibited a very similar profile of uterine involution described by the logarithmic equation y = -2.33ln(x) + 9.43 (R 2 = 0.98, P < 0.05) where y = uterine diameter (cm) and x = days postpartum. Ovarian activity started within the first week postpartum and was characterized by appearance of one to three follicles ranged in mean size [4.95 ± 1.45 to 8.56 ± 0.66] on both ovaries. These findings could assist practitioners to decide when goats should be bred following parturition.

Abstract. This study aimed to examine the response of luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion and ovarian steroid profile to TAK-683, an investigational metastin/kisspeptin analog, through treatment during different stages of the luteal phase in goats. Nine cycling Shiba goats (4.4 ± 2.3 years old) were assigned to early luteal phase (ELP, n = 4), mid-luteal phase (MLP, n = 4), and control (n = 5) groups. The ELP and MLP groups were administered 50 µg of TAK-683 intravenously on either day 5 or between days 7-14 after ovulation, respectively. The control group received vehicle between days 7-14 after ovulation. Blood samples were collected at 10-min (2-6 h), 2-h (6-24 h), and 24-h (24-96 h) intervals after treatment. Significant increases in plasma LH concentration were detected during the periods of 3 to 5 h and 2 to 5 h in the ELP and MLP groups, respectively. Estradiol concentrations continuously increased with the rise of basal LH secretion after TAK-683 treatment in two goats of the ELP group with a surge-like release of LH, but not in the goats without LH surge, i.e. the MLP and control group ones. Plasma progesterone concentration and the lengths of estrous cycle in all groups did not change significantly from the time before and after treatment. Present findings indicate that the responses of LH and ovarian steroids to treatment with TAK-683 depend on the stage of the luteal phase of the estrous cycle. We suggest that the stimulatory effects of TAK-683 on LH secretion are reduced in the process leading to the mid-luteal phase in cycling goats. Kisspeptin-54 or kisspeptin-10, either the full length or the C-terminal amidated 10-amino-acid sequence of kisspeptin, potently stimulates luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in both male and female mammals [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Our previous study showed that the stimulatory action of kisspeptin-10 on LH secretion is attributable to the stimulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurosecretion into the hypophyseal portal circulation in castrated goats [8]. Kisspeptin is also involved in the hypothalamic regulation of GnRH secretion by gonadal steroids. Several lines of evidence suggest that the hypothalamic kisspeptin neurons expressing receptors for androgens, estrogens, and progesterone are implicated in the negative feedback control of GnRH/gonadotropin secretion [1].
