Ultrasonographic findings of intestinal intussusception in seven cats

Abstract: The medical records of seven cats with intestinal intussusception that were diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography and exploratory laparotomy were reviewed. In transverse ultrasonographic sections the intussusception appeared as a target-like mass consisting of one, two or more hyperechoic and hypoechoic concentric rings surrounding a C-shaped, circular or non-specific shaped hyperechoic centre. Part of the intestine representing the inner intussusceptum, located close to the hyperechoic centre and surrounded … Show more

“…As etiologias da intussuscepção podem ser as mais variadas possíveis, como: diarréi-as crônicas, alimentos grosseiros e mal-digeridos, alterações na dieta e enterites bacterianas ou virais, além de massas ou tumores intraluminais (Patsikas et al 2003, Tomassian 2005.…”

“…The vast majority of cases of intussusception is of unknown origin [5,9,11,12,14]. In young dogs, enteritis (viral, parasitic or immunomediated) and general anesthesia, with or without abdominal surgical procedures, have been identified as possible predisposing factors.…”

“…Altering of the wall layers may consist of poor definition, thickening, or echogenicity changes. Hyperechoic speckles within the mucosa were identified in cases of inflammatory bowel disease, but were not specific An intussusception appears as a multilayered structure in the longitudinal view and as multiple concentric rings (target lesion) in the transverse view 22,28,71,77,78,81 (Figures 12-34 and 12-35). 86 Hyperechoic striations were most common in cases of proteinlosing enteropathy, whereas no changes in mucosal echogenicity were identified in patients responsive to a change in diet.…”
