Ultrasonographic Examination of the Reticulum, Rumen, Omasum, Abomasum, and Liver in Calves

Abstract: This article describes the ultrasonographic findings of the reticulum, rumen, omasum, abomasum, and liver of calves from birth to 100 days of age. Reticular motility is used to exemplify how the forestomach function in calves progresses and gradually approaches that of adult cattle. The ultrasonographic examination of the esophageal groove reflex and the investigation of factors affecting esophageal groove closure are described. The ultrasonographic findings of the forestomachs and abomasum of calves with rumi… Show more

“…However, the reuse of cellulose fibers in manure from animal husbandry, particularly the most prevalent cow dung, has seldomly been researched. The cows, as ruminants, eat plant-based food, which is taken into the cows’ four-chambered stomach, where it is digested and broken down into smaller pieces before the excretion of dung [ 20 ]. Within these chambers, the food is subjected to mechanized processing while different digestive enzymes and microorganisms break down the plant fibers, notably hemicellulose and pectin.…”

“…The abomasum constitutes the largest gastric portion of newborn calves, as they need to use nutrients from their exclusively milk-based diet, not requiring as much of the rumen-reticulum and omasum, which are important for the fermentation of structural carbohydrates in roughages [ 1 , 16 ]. In the laparoscopy of the fetuses, the abomasum was physically developed and located in the right half of the abdominal cavity, on the floor of the abdomen, where it was possible to explore and manipulate the organ and identify it for performing the laparoscopic cannulation technique.…”

“…Type-3 is a perforated ulcer accompanied by localised peritonitis [3], U4 is a perforated ulcer characterised by generalised peritonitis [4] and U5 is an ulcer that has perforated into the omental bursa causing omental bursitis [5]. Ultrasonographic examination of the abomasum has been described in cows [6] as well as in calves [7]. The abomasum can be visualised about 10 cm caudal to the xyphoid in cows and it occupies more space on the right side of the median than the left.…”
