Ultrasonographic diagnosis of a fibrinonecrotic colonic cast in a kitten with feline panleukopenia virus

et al.

Abstract: Ultrasonography of a cat with diarrhoea and vomiting revealed a multi-layered, discrete linear structure within the large intestine with retention of the intestinal layers which could potentially be confused with an intestinal intussusception. The structure was ultimately expelled from the large intestine during defecation, and confirmed as a fibrinonecrotic cast. The origin of the fibrinonecrotic cast was assumed to be an intestinal pseudo-membrane formed in enteritis caused by immune suppression due to the p… Show more

“…In a recent case report of an 8-month old kitten with FPV, a multi-layered appearance of the intestine was described representing superimposed wall layers and therefore resembling intussusceptions. However, a few hours after the ultrasonographic examination, the cat defecated a 15 cm-long piece of tissue and the histological examination revealed necrotic and cellular debris, indicating a fibrinonecrotic colonic cast [7][8][9].…”

“…Conjuntamente, para além dos achados clínicos e laboratoriais, o diagnóstico definitivo foi dado pela identificação do agente por PCR, ELISA e/ou por achados de necrópsia (WOLFESBERGER et al, 2012;MATTES et al, 2013;AREND, 2020;CIRONE et al, 2012;FONSECA, 2019;ISAYA, 2021;CAMERO et al, 2004;LEE et al, 2012;DECARO et al, 2010;BATTILANI et al, 2013).…”

“…At the author's knowledge, no data is yet available on the ultrasonographic features of cats affected with FPV, especially regarding acute intestinal lesions. In a recent case report of an 8-month old kitten with FPV, multiple hyperechoic and hypoechoic parallel lines within the large intestinal wall, resembling intussusceptions, were described; based on histopathology they were considered fibronecrotic colonic casts [6]. Furthermore, in a cat with mechanical ileus, motility and fluid accumulation proximal to the obstruction site have been observed [7], while in those with functional ileus associated with pancreatitis and abdominal effusion, corrugation of small bowel loops [8] was present.…”
