Ultrasonographic determination of caput epididymis diameter is strongly predictive of obstruction in the genital tract in azoospermic men with normal serum FSH

Abstract: SUMMARYThe relationship between epididymis ultrasonography (US) and infertility is poorly defined probably owing to lack of objective and reproducible criteria of US evaluation. Here, we evaluated US size of testes, caput and of corpus epididymis in infertile men: 165 with total sperm count ! 39 9 10 6 , 187 with total sperm count <39 9 10 6 and 75 azoospermic men. Blood levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and of total testosterone were also evaluated. US measures obtained using a high-frequency (12 M… Show more

“…Epididymal cysts are not associated with altered testicular volume or sperm quality (Hart et al ., ). Caput epididymis is often enlarged in obstructive azoospermia, but its US size is not different in OAT and in normozoospermic men (Pezzella et al ., ). US confirms varicocoele when physical findings are equivocal.…”

“…Besides the history of epididymitis or sexually transmitted disease, enlargement and fullness of epididymis by palpation are useful indications of epididymal obstruction, especially combined with another diagnostic assessment of ultrasonography. The degree of dilation of epididymal tube can be reliably identified 1920. In the cohort of our research, sperms were much more easily detected in the patients showing thin net-like ectasia or tubular ectasia of epididymal duct, compared to the group with normal epididymal duct.…”

“…NIH‐CPSI) to assess prostatitis‐like symptoms (Lotti et al, ; Wagenlehner et al, ) and physical examination, endocrinological investigations and genetic analysis for karyotype, AZF deletions and CFTR gene mutations (Jungwirth et al, ). Ultrasound investigations followed a standardised protocol, as published in detail elsewhere (Lotti & Maggi, ; Pezzella et al, ; Pilatz, Altinkilic, Kohler, Marconi, & Weidner, ; Pilatz, Rusz, Wagenlehner, Weidner, & Altinkilic, ).…”
