Background: The most common musculoskeletal conditions reported in donkeys are related to the foot. Radiographic examinations are clinically important in the diagnosis of foot abnormalities and are commonly used. However, few studies have been conducted to establish the normal radiographic appearance of a donkey’s foot. Aim: To determine the radiographic features of the front digit in healthy Amiata donkeys. Methods: Radiographic examinations were performed on 56 forefeet of 28 Amiata donkeys. Three radiographic views of each front foot were taken: lateromedial, dorsopalmar and dorso 65°proximal/palmarodistal oblique. Seventeen angular and linear radiographic parameters and the crena solearis were evaluated in all forefeet, and 18 morphometric parameters were evaluated in 16 out of 56 forefeet. Statistical analysis was carried out on all the measures assessed. Results: The radiographic appearance of the forefoot was ascertained, and data were reported as median ± standard error, minimum and maximum values. No statistical differences were obtained between the right and left forefeet. Conclusion: The normal baseline parameters of the forefeet of Amiata donkeys were recorded and described and compared with other donkey breeds and horses. The findings highlighted that the donkey breed affects the radiographic parameters of the digit.

This study was conducted to establish a detailed anatomic reference for the carpal joint of apparently healthy donkeys using ultrasonography (US), computed tomographic (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Ten orthopedically sound adult donkeys were used for US examination of the carpal joint in each forelimb. Additionally, the carpi of ten donkey cadavers were subjected to CT and MRI examinations. The carpal joint was divided into four zones to simplify examination. US assessment of the carpal joint included transverse and longitudinal sonograms. CT was performed using three planes: axial, sagittal, and coronal. MRI was performed using axial and sagittal planes with two sequences: gradient-echo T1-weighted and proton density. The donkeys’ carpus US, CT, and MRI images were labeled and serially interpreted based on references and anatomical cross-sections. The anatomical characteristics of the carpal joint and the surrounding soft tissue structures were thoroughly described and precisely differentiated on US, CT, and MRI scans. It can be concluded that US, CT, and MRI are effective noninvasive diagnostic imaging tools for evaluating the carpal joint in donkeys. Moreover, these imaging modalities can aid in establishing a reference database for the carpal joint of donkeys, which differs from that of horses.

Objetivo. Proveer valores de referencia de medidas anatómicas de estructuras tendinosas y ligamentos metacarpales en burros criollos colombianos utilizando la ultrasonografía como herramienta de medición. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó la exploración ultrasonográfica de los tendones y ligamentos de la región metacarpiana palmar de ambos miembros en 15 burros clínicamente sanos. Las variables a medir fueron: área transversal (cm2), ancho latero medial (ALM) (cm) y espesor dorso palmar (EDP) (cm). Resultados. Se encontró que no existe diferencia en las medidas entre los dos miembros ni en función del sexo. Además se encontró que la estructura de mayor área en las zonas proximales (1A y 1B) fue el ligamento suspensorio (0.548 cm2), y en las distales (2A y 2B) el tendón flexor digital profundo (0.468 cm2). Conclusiones. Las medidas anatómicas de las estructuras tendinosas y de los ligamentos metacarpales palmares en burros criollos colombianos son similares a las encontradas en la literatura internacional. Se presentaron los valores de referencia para las medidas anatómicas (morfométricas) de tendones y ligamentos metacarpales palmares en burros criollos colombianos.
