Estrogens are one of the micro-pollutants in the wastewater which have detrimental effects on water living organisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of ultrasound to reduce the estrogen (E1) and 17 beta-estradiol (E2) from municipal wastewater. Hence, a cylindrical batch reactor was designed. The effects of powers, frequency, exposure time and pH on reduction efficiency were investigated. The residual concentration of E1 and E2 hormones was measured in reactor effluent by electrochemiluminescence (ECL) method. The results showed that ultrasound removed 85–96% of both E1 and E2 hormones after 45 min while other parameters changes in the range of their operations. Also, the frequency and power of ultrasound had a significant effect on reduction efficiency of hormones while the exposure had no significant effect. Furthermore, the interaction of power and frequency reduced their efficacy to 64.3% (Pvalue = 0.005). The result also indicated that the ultrasound waves have high ability to reduce Steroid hormones from municipal wastewater. The proposed method can be considered as one of the significant strategies for reduction or destruction of hormones from wastewater due to the non-generation of dangerous by-products and the low energy consumption.

The main aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the initial pH values of the buffer on photofermentation biohydrogen production. Hydrogen production and the kinetics of it under different initial pH values were analyzed. Effects of initial pH values on reducing sugar consumption, hydrogen production rate, and byproduct production were evaluated at initial pH values of 5-7. The results showed that initial pH values of phosphate buffer had a significant effect on biohydrogen production via photo-fermentation. With the initial pH value of phosphate buffer at 6.0, the cumulative hydrogen production reached its maximum, 569.6 mL. The maximum hydrogen production rate was 23.96 mL/h at the initial pH value of 6.5. With the initial pH values at 5.0 and 7.5, the maximum hydrogen production rates were becoming lower, only 5.59 mL/h and 5.42 mL/h, respectively. And with the increase in pH values, the peak period of hydrogen production was gradually delayed, indicating that the alkaline environment had a negative effect on the ability of photosynthetic bacteria. This study revealed the influence of phosphate buffer initial pH values on the biohydrogen production via photo-fermentation and aimed to provide a scientific reference for further improving the theory and technology for biohydrogen production from biomass. The present study investigates the treatment of palm oil mill e uent (POME) with a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system. This paper presents the results of the yield of hydrogen (H 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ), and the removal of organic matter and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from POME. Also, state-of-the-art methods were employed to measure methane and hydrogen directly from the reactor as well as their improvement. The DBD was carried out with an applied voltage of 10-25 kV in a batch glass plasma reactor. The results revealed a signi cant e ect of the voltage variation on the yield of H 2 and CH 4 . Increasing the applied voltage enhanced the conversion of POME with COD reduction in the range of 48.9 to 53.7% and biochemical oxygen demand reduction in the range of 30 to 40% when the applied voltage was 15-25 kV. Furthermore, to estimate the removal of organic matter in POME, a uorescence excitation-emission matrix was used.
