“…First, plate-like Bi 2.5 Na 2.5 Nb 4 O 15 particles with a thickness less than 1 μm and a width about 10 μm (as shown in figure 1a) were synthesized by heating Bi 2 O 3 , NaCO 3 and Nb 2 O 5 in NaCl molten salt according to equation (1). Textured (K 0.44 Na 0.52 Li 0.04) (Nb 0.86 Ta 0.10 Sb 0.04)O 3 thick film was fabricated by the screen printing method with plate-like NaNbO 3 particles as template. Thick film with 75% grain orientation was prepared. Remnant polarization and coercive field observed from the P-E loops of textured thick film were 3.6 μC cm −2 and 21 kV cm −1 , respectively. Textured (K 0.44 Na 0.52 Li 0.04) (Nb 0.86 Ta 0.10 Sb 0.04)O 3 thick film exhibited diffusion behaviour by analysing the temperature dependence of permittivity and loss tangent. The result of leakage current density showed a conduction mechanism of Schottky emission. Piezoelectric (PZT) properties of the thick film were characterized by the relationship of unipolar strain and applied electric field and the PZT constant d * 33 of textured thick film reached to 150 pm V −1. Nonlinear PZT property of the thick film was investigated by Rayleigh law.

K0.5Na0.5Nb1-xTaxO3 (KNNT) (with x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.50 and 1) ceramics are prepared by ball milling and two calcinations at 830 °C for 5 hours. Subsequent sintering of centimeter size pellets, 1-2 mm thick, is studied using conventional and spark plasma sintering techniques with various conditions. X-Ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy phase identification reveal orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transitions occurring at about x = 0.50, associated to chemical disorder. Scanning electron microscope observations and associated energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis reveal some composite aspect of the ceramics. Substitution of niobium by tantalum, corresponding to x increase, decreases significantly the grain size but also the densification of the ceramics sintered by conventional sintering, while, enhancement of the piezoelectric properties is observed for both sintering techniques.Thanks to parameters optimization of the spark plasma sintering process, temperature-time-pressure, significant improvement of the relative density over 96 %, is obtained for all the compositions sintered between 920 and 960 °C, under 50 MPa, for 5 to 10 minutes with heating rates of 100° C/min. High relative permittivity (εr = 1027), piezoelectric charge coefficient (d33 = 160 pC/N) and piezoelectric coupling factor (kp = 46 %) are obtained in spark plasma sintered K0.5Na0.5Nb1-xTaxO3 composite ceramics, for x ranging between 0.10 and 0.30 and for some specific spark plasma sintering conditions. Thus, tantalum single element substitution on niobium site, combined with spark plasma sintering, is revealed to be a powerful combination for the optimization and the reliability of piezoelectric properties in KNN system.

The effect of modifying the properties of KNN-based ceramics with Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 (BiT) been investigated in this work. The density measurements show that additions of BiT to the samples slightly increase the density values. Scanning electron microscope images of the samples indicate that the average sizes of the grains decrease with BiT addition while the volume of pores increase. X-ray diffraction results show that for (K 0.5 Na 0.5)NbO 3 based samples, a transformation from orthorhombic to pseudo-cubic phase is observed. For both K 0.48 Na 0.48 Li 0.04)(Nb 0.9 Ta 0.1)O 3 and K 0.48 Na 0.48 Li 0.04)(Nb 0.86 Ta 0.1 Sb 0.04)O 3-based compositions, the phase transition is from an orthorhombic-tetragonal coexistence to a tetragonal structure dominated phase coexistence. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and resistivity values of the samples increase slightly with BiT addition. Good hysteresis curves are obtained in (K 0.5 Na 0.5)NbO 3-based samples only at low BiT amounts. Remnant polarization values between 9 C/cm 2 and 25 C/cm 2 are obtained for K 0.48 Na 0.48 Li 0.04)(Nb 0.9 Ta 0.1)O 3 and K 0.48 Na 0.48 Li 0.04)(Nb 0.86 Ta 0.1 Sb 0.04)O 3-based samples. With the exception of KNNLT samples where the d * 33 values increase from 203 ± 7 pm/V at 0 mol% to 275 ± 6 pm/V at 0.35 mol%, the d * 33 values of the samples gradually decrease with increasing BiT content. This work shows that to obtain good properties for KNN-based ceramics, only very small amounts of BiT are required.
