Ultrasonic transducers and transducer arrays for applications in air

Abstract: A transducer assembly for a proximity sensor which com prises an elongated polymer piezoelectric film (16). The film is supported as an elongated series of arcuate segments which are curved in the same direction and have the same radius of curvature. Electrodes (18) on both sides of the piezoelectric film form opposed pairs, each pair being asso ciated with a respective arcuate segment. The electrodes are utilized for applying a varying electric field across the thickness of the film to cause an ultrasonic aco… Show more

“…High power UTs for applications in air are mainly of capacitive type (CUT). Advantages of CUTs are their high transfer coefficient (high transmitting efficiency in air) in combination with a wide bandwidth and the simple design that is reflected in their low cost (Manthey et al 1992 andRafiq et al 1991). Figure 2.3 shows the CUT used in the present setup (SensComp, Inc.) with its large noise generating diaphragm of about 40mm and its DC and AC power supply.…”

“…Ultrasound is not only useful to bat, in many industry and research fields, such as NonDestructive Evaluation (NDE), medical imaging, obstacle identification, acoustic microscopy and so on, it plays also an important roll [1][2]. One attractive feature of ultrasound is that it can provide inside information of the object without contact on it.…”

“…Although optical remote sensors provide similar capabilities even at much greater distance, their effectiveness depends heavily on the optical property (transparency, roughness, orientation etc.) of the reflecting surface [2]. Moreover, in harsh industrial environment, dust and vapor may also present influences.…”
