Ultrasonic Log Response in Lightweight Cement Conditions

Abstract: Lightweight cement can present unique challenges to efficient and accurate evaluation of cement sheath integrity. Standard bond log tools require strong compressional bonding to casing to observe an attenuation of the sonic signal that is set up inside the casing. Lightweight cement often experiences less cohesion to casing because of its lowered fluid density when pumped and lower compressive strength after being set up. These properties can negatively affect measurement.Definition of the cement sheath must s… Show more

“…It is important to find a reliable and consistent method for determining the presence of the cement sheath. 78 The usual procedures for cement job evaluation need to be modified for foamed cements. When running a cement bond log (CBL) with foamed cement, special steps must be considered due to the presence of gas in the slurry, which affects the attenuation of the slurry.…”

“…By using this derivative, it is easy to identify the presence of lightweight cement and to assess its quality. 78 It is recommended to conduct temperature surveys 8 to 24 h after a cement job. The dilution of cement and the insulation effect of gas can result in a less pronounced thermal change compared to that of conventional extended cements.…”
