“…Patients who gain SVR have cleared HCV RNA from serum by 2 weeks after the treatment start [19] . HCV RNA decreased by 3 logs within the first 4 weeks of treatment in all patients who have accomplished SVR [20,21] ; decreases in HCV RNA were almost identical at 1 and 3 months, however [22] .…”

“…We performed quantitation of serum HCV RNA levels by a central laboratory using multicycle reverse-transcription (RT)-PCR (SuperQuant, National Genetics Institute [NGI], Culver City, CA) as described. 14 In the event that the viral RNA level was less than the lowest limit of quantification of this assay (40 IU/ml), we performed the NGI UltraQual assay on the sample. We identified HCV genotype by PCR and DNA sequencing at Day 1 (predose), Week 4 (predose), and at the End of Treatment visit (Day 50) (LabCorp, Raritan, NJ).…”

“…Nonetheless, somewhat better results have occasionally been reported in short series of patients with the use of higher doses of IFN or induction therapies based on daily administration of the drug. In the study by Beckering et al [19], sustained response was observed in 3 out of 11 patients (27%) treated with daily IFN for 5 days at a dosis of 10 MU followed by IFN 3 times a week at the same dosis until completing 4 weeks of treatment up to a total of 24 weeks at doses of 3 MU 3!/week. In another study using an initial treatment with high daily doses, a sustained rate of response was observed in 21% (9/42) [20].…”
