Ultralow friction polymer composites incorporated with monodispersed oil microcapsules

Abstract: Ultralow friction polymer composites were prepared by adding oil-loaded microcapsules into epoxy (EP) resin. Mono-dispersed polystyrene (PS)/poly alpha olefin (PAO) microcapsules with a diameter of ~2 μm and a shell thickness of ~30 nm were prepared by solvent evaporation method in an oil-in-water emulsion. The lubrication behaviors of the EP resin composites with oil-loaded microcapsules have been investigated under different loads and sliding speeds. As compared with the pure EP resin, the friction coefficie… Show more

“…When the microcapsule content is 20 wt%, the friction coefficient of the composite coating decreases to a minimum of 0.06, which is reduced by 90.65% compared to that of a pure epoxy coating. In addition, Zhang et al [10] prepared monodispersed polystyrene (PS)-encapsulated polyalphaolefin (PAO) microcapsules ( Fig. 6(e)).…”

“…In a bearing, the lubricant should be capable to reduce friction and wear, evacuate the heat, inhibit corrosion, and clean the surface, etc. [99][100][101]. In a well-lubricated running bearing, the two counterfaces are completely separated by a thin lubricant film, avoiding direct contact.…”

“…The incorporation of rigid core‐shell nanoparticles to the polymer matrix can greatly improve the toughness and inhibit the fatigue‐crack propagation process due to the high resistance of the nanoparticles against plastic deformations 18–21 . Core‐shell nanoparticles are also extensively used in lubrication applications 22–24 . For instance, nanoparticles with a core containing oil lubricant show extremely low‐friction coefficient and solve the problem of the storage of the liquid lubricant.…”

“…[18][19][20][21] Core-shell nanoparticles are also extensively used in lubrication applications. [22][23][24] For instance, nanoparticles with a core containing oil lubricant show extremely low-friction coefficient and solve the problem of the storage of the liquid lubricant. Moreover, core-shell nanoparticles play a vital role in designing the self-lubrication and self-healing materials, which can effectively protect the engineering materials from mechanical damage or fatigue fracture.…”
