Ultrafine Pt nanoparticles supported on a dendrimer containing thiol groups: an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of benzimidazoles and benzothiazoles from benzyl alcohol derivatives in water

Abstract: A new heterogeneous reusable catalyst containing ultrafine Pt nanoparticles was synthesized and applied for the synthesis of benzimidazoles and benzothiazoles in water as a green solvent.

“…The catalytic activity of Ru/SrTiO 3 :Rh lasted more than a week, the selectivity reached 92 % [52] . The production of industrial materials (such as benzimidazole, benzothiazole and organic phosphine compounds) can be achieved through the substitution reaction of benzyl alcohol derivatives, [53,54] for example, the synthesis of phosphine sulfide (phosphine oxide) from alcohol derivatives and Ph 2 PI [55] . Ph 2 PI containing NaI has the exophilic ability to promote the conversion of oxo‐containing compounds and weakens the ability of pentavalent phosphine, which is not economical.…”

“…Many heterogeneous catalysts have been reported for the oxidative coupling between alcohols and amines. Efficient noble metal-based catalysts have been described based on gold, silver, ruthenium, , palladium, , platinum, and others. , However, these catalysts and processes have disadvantages; in some cases, oxygen pressure is required, combined with strong inorganic bases, demanding the use of special reactors . Moreover, the application of these materials on an industrial scale is very limited due to their high cost.…”

“…[ 30 ] Chandan's group described the synthesis of benzothiazoles from alcohols/aldehydes with 2‐aminothiophenol utilizing heterogeneous Pt nanoparticles as a catalyst. [ 17 ] In addition, Nori et al accounted the synthesis of benzothiazoles from alcohols and 2‐aminothiophenol catalyzed by Pt nanoparticles in the heterogeneous medium in 24 h. [ 31 ] Narang and coworkers documented the construction of benzazoles utilizing Co (II) catalyst under an oxygen atmosphere with limited substrate scope. [ 32a ] Following a thorough review of the literature, it is believed that there are no reports available for the direct fabrication of benzothiazoles utilizing Pd(II) pincer catalysts by ADC methodology.…”
