Ultrafine CoP Nanoparticles Supported on Carbon Nanotubes as Highly Active Electrocatalyst for Both Oxygen and Hydrogen Evolution in Basic Media

Abstract: The development of low-cost and highly active electrocatalysts for two half reactions: H2 and O2 evolution reactions (HER and OER), is still a huge challenge to realize water splitting. Herein, we report that CoP nanoparticles (NPs) can act as a bifunctional catalyst for both HER and OER. Particularly, ultrafine CoP NPs decorated on N-doped multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) exhibit remarkable catalytic performance for OER in 0.1 M NaOH aqueous solution, with a low onset overpotential of 290 mV, a Tafel slope… Show more

“…[159,160] The doping of Fe III can, in principle, induce oxygen vacancies for easier polaron hopping to the neighboring atoms, which brings about improved charge mobility. [171][172][173][174][175][176][177][178][179][180] These inorganic materials are considered as "interstitial alloys," showing a dominant (semi)metallic nature. However, there is still debate on whether the Ni II sites or the Fe III sites are the real active OER centers in the NiFe-based materials.…”

“…CC (black curve) shows two diffraction peaks, at around 25°and 43°, which can also be observed in the XRD of CoP/CC. [14,19]. Compared to the XRD of Co(OH)F/CC (as shown in Fig.…”

“…Therefore, the discovery of a non-precious electrocatalyst with long-life cycling stability, high activity and low cost for HER is critically important. Recently, transition metal sulfides (WS 2 , MoS 2 , CoS 2 ) [10,16], transition metal hydroxides (Ni(OH) 2 , Co(OH) 2 ) [17,18], and transition metal phosphides (Ni x P, Co x P, Fe x P, Fe-CoP) [19][20][21][22][23] have been investigated as efficient, low-cost and nonprecious catalysts for HER, displaying high performance. Consequently, transition metal phosphide materials have received significant attention as active HER catalysts [19,24].…”
